"He would be disappointed in a lot of the comedians on the show, and I'd go, `Dave, there are so many great comedians out there. Why don't we have them on the show?' Brill says. "And eventually he said, `Give it a shot.'"
"The Late Show" had been booking about one comedian a month, but when Brill took over, he asked for one a week. He was given a tentative run that started last April, when the show first started booking comedians every Friday. Brill estimates that the show now carries 40 to 45 comedians a year. That's a lot of talent to find each week, but Brill still tours as a comedian and knows where to find talent.
"Diamonds are valuable because they're rare, and so are good comedians," he says. "And you've got to find those diamonds."
Brill's experience as a booker and a comedian puts him in a good position to evaluate and work with talent.
